Key Responsibilities
- Interpreting construction drawings, roof layouts, and project specifications to determine the scope of roofing and cladding work, including required materials, dimensions, and installation methods.
- Selecting appropriate metal materials such as Colorbond steel, galvanised steel, aluminium and other roofing metals, ensuring the correct profiles, gauges and finishes are used in accordance with project specifications.
- Measuring and marking sheet metal components using templates, gauges and precision measuring tools to prepare materials for roofing panels, flashings, gutters and other rainwater goods.
- Cutting and preparing sheet metal using hand tools, power shears, guillotines, drills and other specialised equipment to achieve accurate dimensions for roofing and architectural metal components.
- Shaping and forming metal sections using folding, bending and rolling machinery to produce flashings, cappings, gutters, downpipes and custom roofing profiles.
- Assembling and joining metal components through riveting, fastening, soldering or other appropriate methods to produce finished roofing and cladding elements.
- Installing roofing and wall cladding systems on site, ensuring proper alignment, weatherproofing and compliance with building and safety standards.
- Finishing and inspecting fabricated components, including filing, smoothing, sealing and cleaning surfaces to ensure durability and a high-quality finish.
- Repairing or replacing damaged roofing, gutters, flashings and other metal components as part of maintenance or refurbishment works.
- Assisting with the fabrication and installation of customised architectural metalwork for roofing and building façade projects where required.
Qualifications and Experience
- A relevant qualification in sheet metal fabrication, metal fabrication or a related field. At least three years of relevant full-time work experience may substitute for the qualification.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, plans and specifications.
- Experience measuring, cutting, shaping and assembling sheet metal components.
- Experience operating sheet metal fabrication machinery and tools.
- Ability to install sheet metal products such as roofing, flashings, gutters and other fabricated components.
- Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and quality standards in fabrication and construction environments.
