Caltex Port Augusta Truck Stop is a well-known highway service centre located in Port Augusta, South Australia. The truck stop caters to truck drivers, travellers, and local customers, offering freshly prepared meals and takeaway food in a busy and fast-paced environment. We are currently looking for a dedicated and reliable Cook to join our kitchen team.
Position Overview
The Cook will be responsible for preparing and cooking meals, maintaining food quality standards, and supporting the smooth operation of the kitchen during busy service periods.
Key Responsibilities
• Inspect and check food ingredients to ensure quality, freshness, and suitability for cooking.
• Prepare and cook a variety of meals including breakfast items, grill foods, and takeaway dishes in line with menu requirements.
• Operate and monitor kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, fryers, and hot plates to maintain correct cooking temperatures.
• Season food during preparation and cooking to maintain consistent taste and quality.
• Portion meals, plate food appropriately, and add sauces, gravies, and garnishes as required.
• Store food safely in refrigerators, freezers, and other temperature-controlled storage areas.
• Maintain a clean and organised kitchen environment, including workstations, utensils, and equipment.
• Ensure all food preparation complies with food safety standards and workplace health and safety regulations.
• Assist with preparing meals that meet special dietary requirements when required.
• Monitor stock levels and assist with receiving and checking deliveries of food supplies.
• Carry out basic food preparation tasks such as cutting, marinating, and portioning ingredients.
• Support the kitchen team during busy service periods to ensure timely preparation and service of meals.
• Assist with estimating food requirements and maintaining sufficient ingredient supplies.
• Provide guidance and basic training to junior kitchen staff when required.
Skills and Experience
• Relevant qualification in Commercial Cookery or demonstrated experience in a similar role.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
• Good understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
• Strong teamwork, communication, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings, and public holidays.
