Who we are

The Office of the Inspector‑General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) is an independent statutory agency responsible for oversight of Australia’s intelligence and security agencies. IGIS provides assurance to Ministers, Parliament and the public that intelligence agencies act lawfully, with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines, and respect human rights.

With the passage of the Strengthening Oversight of the National Intelligence Community Act 2025, IGIS’s jurisdiction will expand in 2026 to include all ten National Intelligence Community agencies and additional intelligence functions, resulting in a period of growth and increased oversight activity.

The opportunity

The Assistant Director, Intelligence Oversight (Executive Level 1) plays a key role in delivering the core oversight functions of IGIS. The role requires the ability to analyse intelligence agency activities, identify issues, form views and make recommendations, supported by sound evidence and judgement.

Assistant Directors lead and contribute to oversight activities and provide guidance and direction to APS staff undertaking this work. The role involves regular engagement with intelligence agencies and contribution to the broader functions of the Office to ensure effective, independent oversight is delivered.

Key responsibilities

  1. Plan, lead and deliver oversight activities, including inspections, inquiries and reviews of intelligence agency activities
  2. Conduct research and analysis, examine documentation, and meet with agency staff to explore issues and address contested views
  3. Apply critical thinking and judgement to analyse complex issues and develop conclusions and recommendations
  4. Draft and present clear, accurate and timely written and verbal advice to a range of audiences, including senior executives
  5. Interpret and apply legislation, policies and procedures relevant to intelligence agency activities
  6. Build and maintain productive, professional and independent relationships with intelligence agencies and other stakeholders
  7. Provide leadership, mentoring and development to APS staff
  8. Handle highly classified and sensitive information and exercise a high level of professional discretion
  9. Contribute to learning, knowledge‑sharing and professional development within the Agency Oversight Branch

The Office is a small portfolio agency within the Attorney- General’s Department. In addition to your core duties, at times you may be asked to undertake tasks that are outside your usual span of duties but that are within the range of your capabilities.
