The role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our Business Services & Tax team in Western Sydney.
Full time position located at Parramatta.
This role is ideal for someone with 1–2 years’ experience in public practice accounting, ideally within business services and tax, who is looking to further develop their technical skills and build a long-term career in professional practice.
You will work closely with partners, managers and senior team members across a diverse client base, gaining exposure to a broad range of accounting, taxation, compliance and advisory matters. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Prepare financial statements, tax returns and BAS for Companies, Trusts, Partnerships and Sole Traders
• Manage bookkeeping tasks including bank reconciliations, invoicing, payroll and journal entries in Xero
• Support managers with tax planning, GST, CGT, FBT, Division 7A, payroll tax and land tax matters
• Prepare management reports, working papers and financial information for reporting and compliance purposes
• Apply accounting skills and knowledge to client accounts, financial statements and financial reports
• Assist in reviewing accounting systems, procedures and internal controls to support accurate reporting outcomes
• Examine financial records, reconciliations, operating costs, and income and expenditure data
• Analyse accounting and financial data to prepare insightful reports and dashboard-style outputs
• Research and assist in advising on technical and specialist aspects of taxation and financial reporting
• Participate in audit assignments and work collaboratively within audit teams where required
• Assist with corporate tax reviews and return preparation, including exposure to consolidated groups, international tax, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, and specialist advisory matters
• Prepare client correspondence, professional advice and other documentation
• Maintain control over workflow, timetables, budgets, deliverables and outputs
• Keep managers informed of assignment progress, risks, issues and matters requiring escalation or client attention
• Refer decisions and approvals to the assignment manager or partner at the appropriate stage of the engagement
• Supervise and review the day-to-day work of junior staff when required
• Communicate effectively with clients and maintain strong professional relationships
• Actively participate in personal and professional development and maintain proficiency in firm systems and procedures
• Undertake other duties as delegated, including contributing to the broader administrative functions of the office where required
About you
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
• 1–2 years’ experience in public practice accounting, ideally within business services and tax
• Experience preparing financial statements, income tax returns and BAS for a range of entity types
• Sound knowledge of Australian taxation and financial reporting requirements
• Experience using Xero and other accounting software
• Exposure to GST, CGT, FBT, Division 7A, payroll tax and land tax matters
• Strong attention to detail, organisational and time management skills
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work effectively within budgets
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• A proactive attitude and willingness to continue learning and develop professionally
• CA or CPA studies commenced, or an intention to commence, will be highly regarded
